2027 Radon Artwork Contest Guidelines
The Tribal Healthy Homes 2027 Radon Artwork Contest is led by the Albuquerque Area Southwest Tribal Epidemiology Center (AASTEC), a program under the parent organization, Albuquerque Area Indian Health Board (AAIHB).
Purpose: The goal of this contest is to encourage young minds to learn more about radon exposure in the home. Contestants can use their creativity to 1) promote awareness of radon and 2) show the benefits of testing homes for radon. Expand the knowledge of the potential health effects of radon exposure within the home to the 27 tribes in the Indian Health Service (IHS) Albuquerque Area.
1) Who can enter? (1 submission per person)

- Middle schoolers (grades 6-8)
- High schoolers (grades 9-12)
- Eligibility: Students must be an enrolled member of an American Indian Tribe or Alaska Native Group
2) When is the deadline/how do I turn it in?
September 8, 2026, to January 31, 2027
- Submissions can be submitted by Survey Monkey in pdf. or jpg. or png.
3) Suggestions
- 8.5” by 11” paper size
- An Initial in the lower right-hand corner is acceptable.
- The Artwork can include the use of crayons, markers, colored pens/pencils, paint, or computer graphics.
4) Rules
- Artwork created using artificial intelligence tools (such as image generators or AI-assisted design platforms) is not allowed. All entries must be hand-drawn, painted, or digitally created by the student without AI assistance.
- All artwork submitted must be created by the student. Submissions should reflect the student's own ideas, style, and effort.
- Use of copyrighted materials such as logos, characters, and brand names is not permitted.
- Everything on the artwork should be appropriate (no bad words, appropriate pictures, Etc.)
- Students are welcome to discuss ideas and brainstorm with others. However, each submitted artwork must be individually created and represent the student's own interpretation and execution.

6) Rubric, i.e., a scoring guide for grading/evaluating a student’s work
- Artwork should reflect the chosen topic
- Radon Information should be accurate.
- The use of creativity & uniqueness.
- Visual communication of the topic.
- Grammar of Art
- This category refers to the elements of art and principles of design, which are the basic rules and building blocks of visual art. The use of line, color, balance, and composition to create an organized and effective artwork.
- Visual communication of the overall artwork and message.
7) What is the prize?
- First place winner
- $100 gift card
- Second place winner
- $50 gift card
- Third place winner
- $25 gift card

Will be posted and promoted on AASTEC social media platforms.
Winners will be selected and notified by Spring 2027
NEW – National Radon Artwork Contest Entry
- The 1st place winner will have the opportunity to opt in for their artwork to be submitted to the 2027 National Radon Artwork Contest.

- Participation in the national contest is optional and will not affect your evaluation in the Tribal Healthy Homes Project 2027 Radon Artwork Contest.
- If you are selected as our 1st Place Winner, we will contact you and ask for your consent again before submitting your artwork to the national contest. Your artwork will only be submitted if you and, when applicable, your parent or guardian provide the required permission.
- If you give permission, AAIHB/AASTEC THHP will submit your artwork on your behalf as our organization’s entry to the national contest. You do not need to submit the artwork yourself.
8) Tips
- Read the Rules/Guidelines carefully and follow directions.
- Do some research on Radon.
- Be sure the information on the artwork is accurate.
- Make note of the Deadline for artwork.
- Draw a picture or pictures that help teach your idea or message.
- Think and be creative.
- Ask an adult to look over your idea/artwork.
- Don’t make it too cluttered by putting too much information.
- Make it easy to read from at least 4 feet of distance.
- For non-digital artwork (example: hand drawing, painting, etc.) ensure that the scan is clear to give the best visual of the artwork when uploading it.
